I'm rather glad they went otherwise I wouldn't exist (my great-great-greatgrandfather went out with the East India company, aged 16 and married my great-great-greatgrandmother, aged 13, born in Kerala. Appallingly, the army encouraged this as it kept the young soldiers out of trouble! Their children and grandchildren spread far and wide, even as far as Simla. One of my greatuncles became a Bengal Lancer much to his brothers amusement. "Only for the uniform, of course." So far I've avoided knee surgery but in the last 9 years I've had 5 surgeries (2 hips included) and a stent installed. Another stent is scheduled soon... Reading is a great escape, that'f for sure!

I thought that we had a lot of books...only about 1,500...minor holdings compared to your accumulation! I've always liked reading about India and the British 'influence' on the sub-continent. Our adopted daughter and one of our friends visited India for a couple of weeks. One hated it with its poverty and the other looked at it from a more positive viewpoint. It sure is a challenging place to live...

Love those postcards! I collect old US postcards but some of those India cards are pure classic! From the looks of the place, Simla ought to be on the touristy route!

As for Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's hope for world maturity and respecting the diversity of belief...its a nice thought...but to date, its definitely fallen on deaf ears.

Heal!

Take Care,

Big Daddy DaveDavidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00419231123238788903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8796960161183320830.post-85603782737470106452018-04-21T19:16:23.841-04:002018-04-21T19:16:23.841-04:00Hi My Friend! I'm sure this has been difficult, recuperating and your husband's disease progressing and I'm relieved you are now in Nashville near your daughter. That must be a huge comfort and relief.

My dad served in India/Pakistan during WWII and while it's a country I really have no desire to visit, I find myself intrigued with that period in times past, finding series like Jewel in the Crown, Indian Summers and such particularly fascinating. I didn't know about Simla, though, and I really appreciate your wonderful research. I know what you mean about finding something that intrigues you and suddenly there are many more books on the stack to read into.

Sending all good wishes for your full recovery and soon. I hope you can get the ankle thing straightened out. Big hugs your way from Michigan!Jeaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17482528482559445943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8796960161183320830.post-33699514790645259402018-04-20T12:24:29.164-04:002018-04-20T12:24:29.164-04:00Dear Vagabonde, thank you for all the research you...Dear Vagabonde, thank you for all the research you did to produce this posting. I found it enthralling as all I know of India comes from the Barbara Cleverly novels. I've read four or five of them. Like you, I find all the info fascinating while realizing that colonialism brought with it a dearth of compassion and understanding--totally unlike the quote wth which you ended the post. It is time that we look for the Oneness that unites all of us.

I must be truthful and say that I find it hard to understand how the president and many of those who control Congress think. I cannot understand how they get their ideological thoughts. But I do try to read so that I can engage in discussions without being totally judgmental.

Finally, I am going to be crass and ask if you know that I've published a convent memoir called "Prayer Wasn't Enough." It came out in March and is getting good reviews. You might enjoy it and it would take you to another "country" where I spent 8 1/2 years! Peace.
