But by the end, you know dozens.

A multi-stage bike race can be hard to follow and I'm always astonished by the number of those watching who have no real understanding of the strategies involved. Why the peloton allows one group to get a 20-minute lead while it goes chasing after a couple of riders who are only 3 minutes ahead. That all the riders (other than the leader) have a time value assigned to them and that this may change and is terribly significant.

Yes, I love the scenery. But the race gives the scenery validity: a flat stage hints at a sprint finish, a mountainous stage often means a big change on the leader-board. A couple of hours with the camera, simply touring, wouldn't have the same bite.

And there are surprises. An unknown Englishman with a strange first name and an unpronounceable surname (Tao Geoghegan Hart) has just won the Giro, Italy's equivalent of the TdF. And I was very interested to read about the different heritage varieties of sheep. I thought that was setting such a good example and I was especially impressed with the crowds.Jeaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17482528482559445943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8796960161183320830.post-60103192398855768982020-10-04T03:18:24.831-04:002020-10-04T03:18:24.831-04:00Magnifique publication Vagabonde !

We both love the scenery shown along the way! All those amazing castles are quite spectacular too. When we visited Scotland 3 years ago, we were always surprised as we drove along some little road and then suddenly come across an old castle or ruin. We'd definitely enjoy visiting Mouton Village and seeing all the different species of sheep. Slovenia is high on our list of countries we'd like to visit but it doesn't look like we're going anywhere until sometime in mid-2021.
